Pikeville, Ky. – The UPIKE men's tennis team honored their 2023 senior class before defeating Indiana University Southeast 7-0 Tuesday afternoon at Bob Amos.
Doubles:
Juan Diego Alzate and Paulo Castillo got the match started with a 6-1 victory over Eli Franks and Nolan Newhauser. IU-S tied the doubles score in the second match when Aiden De Witt and Camden Jones won 6-2 over Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson. With the team doubles point on the line, seniors Valentin Ortiz and Mirko Dedich teamed up for a 6-2 win over Eric Whitehouse and Nolan Patterson to put UPIKE up 1-0.
Singles:
Valentin Ortiz continued to dominate his singles matches, notching a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eli Franks. Ortiz's convincing win was followed up by a 6-0, 6-2 win by Juan Diego Alzate over his Grenadier counterpart Aiden De Witt. Alfonso Robinson secured a fourth team point for UPIKE after defeating Nolan Newhauser 6-1, 6-3.
The Bears continued to dominate, with Mirko Dedich winning 6-0, 6-3 and Paulo Castillo winning 6-0, 6-0. Senior Luis Gayoso rounded off a great day for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over IU-S's Nolan Patterson. Gayoso's match win gave the Bears a 7-0 victory over the Grenadiers.
UPIKE climbs to 10-4 (6-2 MSC) following today's triumph over IU-S. Coach Brennan Alderman's squad will be back at it Wednesday afternoon for a Mid-South showdown with the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders at Bob Amos.
