Pikeville, Ky. – UPIKE men's tennis fell to the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders by a final count of 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Bob Amos Park.
Doubles:
Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich opened doubles play with a 6-3 win over Joaquin Mersch and Santiago Diaz. Valentin Ortiz and Paulo Castillo secured the doubles team point with a 6-3 win over Jan Silhavy. Lindsey Wilson got one back in the doubles round when Tiago Almeida and Anatoliy Voloshyn won 6-2 over Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson. UPIKE held a 1-0 lead heading into the singles matches.
Singles:
The first singles match pitted Valentin Ortiz against Jan Silhavy. Silhavy took the first set 6-4, then Ortiz came back and won the second set 6-3. Silhavy ultimately took the singles match after a 7-6 win in the third set. Juan Diego Alzate lost 6-2, 6-2 to Tiago Almeida, then Alfonso Robinson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Ilyas Koichairi. The Bears got one back when Paulo Castillo won 6-3, 6-1. Lindsey Wilson took the match after Mirko Dedich and Martin Lorenzo fell 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-6, respectively.
UPIKE falls to 10-5 (6-3 MSC) following today's loss to the Blue Raiders. The Bears will travel to Williamsburg, Ky. Saturday for a match with the University of the Cumberlands.
