Lebanon, Tenn. – UPIKE's six game win streak was snapped after a 4-3 loss to the no. 12 Cumberland Phoenix Sunday.
Doubles:
Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson lost a 6-2 decision to CU's Pavel Kelo and Adrijan Hrzic to open doubles play. The Phoenix clinched the doubles point after Julian Parada and German Suarez won 6-4 over Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich.
Valentin Ortiz and Paulo Castillo got one back for the Bears with a 6-4 win over Daniel Wessels and Dan Slapnik Trost. Cumberland held a 1-0 lead after doubles play.
Singles:
Valentin Ortiz followed up his doubles victory with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Pavel Kelo. Juan Diego Alzate won 7-6, 7-6 over Adrijan Hrzic to put UPIKE up 2-1 in the match. Cumberland's Julian Parada came back with a 6-1, 6-1 over Alfonso Robinson to tie the match score.
CU took the match lead back after UPIKE's Martin Lorenzo fell to Daniel Wessels 6-1, 7-6. German Suarez scored the fourth match point for CU after a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win over Mirko Dedich. The match ended when Paulo Castillo knocked off Fernando Flores 6-3, 6-4. Castillo's win was not enough to take the match, however, and the Phoenix took this one 4-3.
The Bears record now stands at 9-4 (6-2 MSC) following Sunday's setback. Coach Brennan Alderman's squad will return to action Tuesday for a matchup with West Virginia State University at Bob Amos.
