Lebanon, Tenn. – UPIKE dropped a 7-0 decision to the Cumberland Phoenix Sunday afternoon.
Doubles:
CU's Jessica Hernandez and Maria Abelaez defeated UPIKE's Hannah Thompson and Elizabeth Davis in the first doubles match. Gabriella Guacanes and Genesis Medina tied up the doubles score with a 7-5 win over Lara Zugasti and Elina Sungatullina. With the doubles point on the line, Katharina Steib and Sara Contreras took on Juanita Mendez and Kaede Hatano. Hatano and Mendez won 6-1 and the Phoenix led 1-0 going into singles play.
Singles:
Gabriella Guacanes faced off against Jessica Hernandez in the opening singles match and lost 6-3, 6-2. Genesis Medina and Elizabeth Davis were defeated 2-0 in their matches and gave CU a 4-0 match lead.
In the fourth singles match, Katharina Steib took on CU's Juanita Mendez. Mendez took the first set, but Steib came back and won the second set 6-2. The Phoenix took the team point when Mendez took the third set. Sara Contreras fell 6-1, 6-3 to Lara Zugasti and Hannah Thompson dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Jawed Hatano. CU won the match 7-0 following Hatano's win.
UPIKE will be back in action Thursday when the Bears will host the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders at Bob Amos.
