Bowling Green, Ky. – UPIKE men's tennis avenged their 5-2 loss to Campbellsville on March 9th with a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in the quarterfinals of the 2023 MSC Tournament.
Doubles:
Campbellsville took an early 1-0 doubles lead after Hernan Toledo and Nicolas Andrado won 6-1 over Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson. Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich then tied it up with a 6-4 win over Nahuel Hernando and Inaki Toledo. Valentin Ortiz and Paulo Castillo secured the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-1 victory over Lucas Guielbaud and Rikuto Towata. UPIKE led 1-0 heading into singles play.
Singles:
Hernan Toledo got the singles matches started with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Valentin Ortiz. Juan Diego Alzate put UPIKE back in front with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Nicolas Andrado. Just like the second match, the match between Paulo Castillo and Maxamiliano Roman went to three sets. Roman won 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Martin Lorenzo then won 6-2, 7-6 and Alfonso Robinson lost 1-6, 0-6, setting up for a pivotal final match.
With the Bears and Tigers tied 3-3, Mirko Dedich faced Lucas Guielbaud with the match on the line. Dedich took the first set 6-3, then Guielbaud responded with a 6-3 win. After a back and forth third set, Mirko Dedich sent the Bears to the semifinals with a 6-4 win and UPIKE won this one 4-3.
Next up for the Bears is a match with the Cumberlands Patriots. UPIKE fell 4-3 to UC in their final regular season match.
