Women's Golf, Crooks win ALC Invite

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – The University of Pikeville women's golf team picked up its second championship in as many tournaments on Tuesday, taking the title in the Alice Lloyd College Women's Fall Invite.

The tournament, like its own fall tournament, was held at par 72, 5,819-yard StoneCrest Golf Course.

In addition to the team title, sophomore Carly Crooks took individual medalist honors.

"We played very well, especially on Tuesday," said Coach Nelson Scott. "We needed to play much better and we did, taking 10 strokes off our score. I'm very proud of how the ladies battled and came away with the win."

UPike stood second after Monday's opening round, having shot 308. It trailed Emory & Henry by seven shots when play began on Tuesday, but fired a 298 while the Wasps carded a 309 day, opening the door for the Bears to win.

UPike finished with a two-day score of 606, four shots ahead of Emory & Henry. UPike-B finished fifth in the six-team field, posting a score of 736.

Crooks, meanwhile, shot a two-day score of 1-under par, finishing with scores of 72-71 to claim the title. It was her third individual crown in her college career.

She finished three strokes ahead of E&H's Katie Hall, who finished 2-over par (73-73). Twin sister Renee Crooks was third at 4-over (72-76).

A total of 34 individual players participated in the event.

Freshman Tayla Howroyd joined the Crooks sisters on the all-tournament team for a second straight tournament. She finished fifth overall with a score of 7-over par (79-72).

Sophomore Lauren Holmes finished 10th in the field with a score of 20-over par, while junior Sophie Beverly was 12th at 25-over par.

Gabrielle Blankenship led UPike's second team with a finish of 23-over par to finish 11th.

UPike will return to action next week, traveling to Georgetown to play in the Georgetown College Fall Invitational at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club on Sept. 18-19.
