Howroyd named golfer of the week

WALESKA, Ga. – Tayla Howroyd has been named women's golfer of the week in the AAC.

Howroyd, a junior from Edenvale, South Africa, was honored for the second time this season in a vote of the league's sports information directors.

Howroyd took the honor after shooting a 54-hole score of 228 in last week's Gibson Bay Collegiate, played in Richmond, Ky. She finished tied for the title, and won it by shooting par in the first hole of the playoff.

She did so in a field full of stiff competition. Of the six teams, four are ranked in the Top 25 and one was receiving votes.

"Tayla played great for us last week," said Coach Nelson Scott. "I was really proud of how she played, especially under the pressure of the playoff hole. She's had a tremendous fall season or us."

Howroyd was also named women's golfer of the week on Sept. 29 after she finished tied for second in the East Tennessee Collegiate, played at the Johnson City Country Club. Howroyd shot 146, three strokes behind the winner.

Howroyd fired an opening-round 72 and followed it with a 74 in the final round.

It is the third time this season a UPike golfer has taken the honor. On Oct. 6, senior Renee Crooks won it after her performance in the Invite and Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Fla.

UPike is wrapping up the fall season this week in Acworth, Ga., where they're competing in the AAC Fall Preview.
