BRISTOL, Tenn. - UPIKE women's tennis opened their Spring 2024 schedule with a 7-0 victory over King University Sunday afternoon.
Azul Barrios and Gabriela Guacanes got the doubles matches started with a 6-2 victory over KU's Dezin Artun and Michaela Koricimora. Yazmin Barrios and Lilia Jerry secured the doubles point for UPIKE after a 6-0 win over Mireia Ortega and Lilly Belcher. Genesis Medina and Sara Contreras comleted the doubles sweep with a 6-0 win.
In the singles matches, Lilia Jerry faced off against Dezin Artun. After falling 3-6 in the first match, Jerry won 6-0 and 10-6 to secure the team point. Yazmin Barrios defeated KU's Michaela Koricimora 6-3, 4-6, and 10-4 to put UPIKE up 3-0. Genesis Medina secured the match for UPIKE after winning 6-0, 6-3 over Mariea Ortega.
The Bears are 1-0 following today's victory, which comes exactly one year after they were defeated 4-3 by the Tornado on February 18th, 2023. UPIKE will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Oakland City University for a match with the Mighty Oaks.
