PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE women's tennis suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, a 6-1 loss to SCAD-Atlanta.
Lilia Jerry and Yazmin Barrios started the doubles matches with a 6-2 win over Mariana Arguedas and Elizabeth Allen. The Bees knotted the doubles score when Begona Benjumeda and Guilia Leali defeated Gabriela Guacanes and Azul Barrios 7-5. SCAD-Atlanta took the doubles team point after Nathalia Diaz Casternda and Genesis Medina lost 6-1 to Nadia Brunzlow and Anastasija Stanjovic.
Gabriela Guacanes lost the first set 6-0 to Guilia Leali but came back in the second set 6-3. Leali took the point after a 6-3 victory to put the Bees up 2-0 in the match. Yazmin Barrios took the first set against Begona Benjumeda 7-5 but fell 6-4 and 6-2 in sets two and three, respectively. The Bees clinched the match after Mariana Arguedas defeated Lilie Jerry 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Azul Barrios did get a team point for UPIKE, defeating Nadia Brunzlow 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
UPIKE is now 5-1 (2-1 AAC) following Sunday's loss. Next up for Coach Cailee Marcum's squad is a road match at University of the Cumberlands Wednesday afternoon.
