PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE women's tennis wrapped up a busy weekend where were lost 4-3 to Milligan then won 6-1 against Columbia College.
Match 1: UPIKE 3, Milligan 4
Yazmin Barrios and Lilia Jerry fell 6-2 to Milligan's Kylie Enarson and Sophie Dunman in the opening doubles match. Nathalia Diaz Casternda and Gabriela Guacanes knotted the doubles score at 1-1 with a 6-3 win over Marta Miralles and Macy Kennedy. The Buffaloes would take the doubles team point after Tiana Shelton and Lauren Wimmer defeated Azul Barrios and Genesis Medina 7-6.
Yazmin Barrios was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Kylie Enarson to start singles play. Trailing 2-0 in the match, Gabriela Guacanes won 6-4, 6-4 to get the Bears back in it. Lilia Jerry tied the match score with a dominant, 6-1, 6-1 win over Macy Kennedy. Azul Barrios had an opportunity to put the Bears ahead and did with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 win over Sophie Dunman. Azul's win the last for UPIKE in this match, however, and the Buffaloes won the match 4-3.
Match 2: UPIKE 6, Columbia College 1
The duo of Lilia Jerry and Yazmin Barrios downed Helena Jokanovic and Mariane Lima 6-3 to open doubles play. The doubles team point was secured shortly after when Gabriela Guacanes and Nathalia Diaz Casternda won 6-3 over Aniya Sims and Vienne Geren. Sara Contreras and Hannah Thompson finished off the doubles portion of the match with a victory over their Columbia College counterparts.
Yazmin Barrios led off the singles matches with 6-1, 6-2 win over Helena Jokanovic. The Koalas got a point back, however, when Mariane Lima won 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 over Lilia Jerry. Gabriela Guacanes put the Bears back up two points in the team score with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Aniya Sims. With the match on the line, Genesis Medina secured the victory for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Hannah Thompson and Sara Contreras won their matches and the Bears won 6-1.
UPIKE is 6-3 (3-2 AAC) following the results from this weekend. Next up for Coach Cailee Marcum's squad is a road match against Union College on Saturday. Saturday's match between the UPIKE and Union will be the first meeting between the two teams since the Bears downed the Bulldogs 9-0 on February 28th, 2016.
