PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville women's tennis defeated the Johnson University Royals 7-0 in their AAC conference opener Saturday.  

The Bears swept the doubles matches, starting with Yazmin Barrios and Lilia Jerry teaming up for a 6-1 victory over Johnson's Paola Testa and Bella Stigall. Then, Azul Barrios and Genesis Medina took on Nolle Leslie and Lauren Murray with the doubles team point on the line. Barrios and Medina came through, recording a dominant, 6-0 win and securing the doubles point. Sara Contreras and Hannah Thompson capped off the doubles matches with a 6-1 win over Clare Torres and Cait Bowling.  

Yazmin Barrios started the singles matches with a 6-2, 6-3 win over JU's Lauren Murray. Lilia Jerry put the Bears up 3-0 with a dominant, 6-0, 6-0 win over Bella Stigall. With match point on the line, Azul Barrios took on Cait Bowling. Barrios secured the team point and the match for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bowling, giving UPIKE the win. Genesis Medina won 6-2, 6-2 over Nolle Leslie. Hannah Thompson and Sara Contreras capped off the Bears' dominant afternoon with 2-0 wins and gave the Bears a 7-0 score in the match.  

UPIKE climbs to 3-0 (1-0 AAC) following today's win over JU. Saturday's win was also the program's first AAC match and the program's first AAC win. Coach Cailee Marcum's squad will be back in action Sunday when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio for a match with Shawnee State.
