WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - University of Pikeville men's and women's track and field opened their outdoor season Friday at the Cumberlands Early Season Meet hosted by University of the Cumberlands Friday.
David Exum stole the show on the men's side after qualifying for the NAIA Outdoor Nationals in the hammer throw with mark of 55.40m. Exum finished second in the event. Finishing one spot behind Exum was teammate Zeke Hagley who threw a personal-best 49.42m.
Alex Rogers made finals in the hammer after coming in eighth place and setting a new personal best 44.15m throw. Tenzing Lindeman also set a new personal record in the hammer with a 35.82m toss. Rogers and Lindeman also set new personal bests in the discus throw. Rogers threw a 42.24m and came in sixth place while Lindeman threw a 39.84m and came in ninth.
Hagley came in second in the shot put with a mark of 15.13m. Isaiah Troutman finished fourth in the pole vault and set a new school record with a mark of 3.35m. Gunter Young also made his debut in the pole vault event Friday.
On the women's side, Valerie Kendrick threw a 35.30m in the discus throw, good for third place in the event. Kendrick came in fourth in the shot put after a 11.32m toss. Sierra Allen ran a new personal best in the 100-meter dash. Allen ran a 13.43 and came in thirteenth place.
Faith Newsom came in ninth in the 400m dash after running a 1:03.27, a new personal best. Gisele Young also ran in the 400 and ran a 1:10.74. Newsom and Allen also competed in the 200m dash, coming in ninth and fourteenth, respectively.
The track and field Bears will be back in action Thursday in Montreat, N.C. for the Montreat Open hosted by Montreat College.
