The University of Pikeville men's and women's track and field competed at two meets over the weekend, sending one squad to Berea, Ky., for the Londan Bond Classic and another to Columbia, Ky., for the Blue Raider Rumble.
At the Londan Bond Classic, the Bears placed well in several events, breaking four school records in the process. One of the big moments of the meet was the inclusion of a Mixed 4x400m, which consist of two male and two female athletes running a relay together.
The Bears would go on to take second place in this event, with a now school record time of 3:55. The relay was comprised of
Faith Newsom,
Carlie Osborne, Joshue Martinez and Jay'Qwan walker.
On the Men's side,
Bruce Coleman had his 3k Steeplechase debut, going 12:06.47 to break the school record by over 20 seconds to finish in fifth place. Jay'Qwan Walker set two PR's, going 51.06 in the 400m to finish second, and 1:01.54 in the 400m hurdles to finish third.
Both
Gunter Young and
Trenton Terry hit new PR times in both the 400m and the 200m, with Young finishing in seventh place in the 400m with a time of 54.35.
Joshua Martinez would go on to win the 800m race, with
Jacob Hughes and
Lucas Gibson both securing new outdoor PRs in the same event.
To round out the track events on the men side,
Kelvin Kurgat finished in third place in the 5000m, with a new PR and school record time of 15.46.45.
Rylen Rash also raced the 5000m, improving his time from indoor by over 45 seconds, finishing with 17.30.98.
Zachary Mason won the High Jump with 1.90m, he also finished second in Triple Jump with a new outdoor PR of 13.01m and fifth in Long Jump with a 6.06m.
On the women's side, Osborne won both the 100m and the 200m, with times of 12.91 and 26.97. Newsom and
Gisele Young both raced well in the 400m and 200m, with both of them finishing in the top 7 in the 400m open.
Morgan Tuttle made her 1500m debut, running a new PR of 6:16.77.
Jasmine Meade and
Alison Cantrell both raced the 800m, setting their new outdoor personal records with Meade at 3:23.14 and Cantrell at 3:29.76.
Jaide Garrett ran well in the 100m.
Michelle Kemboi had her outdoor debut in the 5000m, racing for a new PR of 25:30.10.
Abigail McPherson did all three jumps this meet, securing a new PR/school record in the High Jump going 1.45m to finish tied for second. She also made finals in the Long Jump, finishing in fifth with 4.40m.
Due to facility issues, the UPIKE throws group when to Lindsey Wilson Blue Raider Rumble. The group of six men would finish third place in the team standings.
The day started over that the shot put where several PRs happened, as five of the six men would make the Shot Put final.
Zeke Hagley won the event with a throw of 15.01m
Alex Rogers would finish fourth with a throw of 13.02m and
Matthew Edwards took fifth with a toss of 12.47m.
Wyatt Fielder set a new PR of 11.79m to take seventh, with Devonte Gordon taking eighth place with a toss of 11.35m. Brad Henson also threw a PR of 10.49m.
They then move on to the hammer were Hagley would also win with a mark of 50.68m. Rogers finished second behind his teammate throwing a new PR of 46.75m. Edwards had a PR toss of 40.60m taking fifth place.
Henson had a PR mark of 29.25m, while Fielder also had a PR with a toss of 27.11m and Gordon had a best throw of 22.17m.
The last event of the day for the throws group was the discus. Hagley again was the winner, giving him a win in all three events he entered. He won with a mark of 42.59m. Rogers finished third throwing 40.54m.
Edwards had another PR of 39.01m to finish sixth and Fielder took ninth, throwing 29.66m. Henson had a PR toss of 28.21m and Gordon had a best toss of 27.69m.
The Bears head over to Charleston, W.Va., for the University of Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational on Friday.
