WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - University of Pikeville men's soccer mounted a furious comeback on the road at Carolina University but fell short and were defeated 3-2 Saturday evening.
Carolina had the first shot of the match in the 6', then had another in the 15' before breaking through in the 17'. CU's Samuel Richter, off a feed from Will McCamley, scored the first goal of the match.
McCamley's goal was Carolina's last shot of the first half. The Bears had four shots on frame in the first half but did not find the back of the net, and Carolina went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins doubled their lead minutes into the second half. Lewis Jacklan gave CU a 2-0 lead in the 47'. Four minutes later, Jacklin scored his second goal of the evening off an assist from McCamley.
UPike made a push in minutes 61' and 62' before finally breaking through in the 64'. Bruno Arenal got the Bears on the board off an assist from Juan Farkas. Carolina, over the next six minutes, had two corner kicks and three shot attempts.
The Bears were able to weather the CU storm before making a push themselves. UPike drove deep into Carolina territory before drawing a foul inside the box, leading to a penalty kick. Arenal buried the PK in the 71' to cut Carolina's lead to one.
Despite scoring two goals in seven minutes, the Bears did not have another shot on goal until the 88'. Arenal had the Bears' final shot on goal but Carolina goalkeeper Joshua Wilson was there to make the save and secure the win for CU.
UPike's record dips to 1-2 on the season following Saturday's loss to Carolina. Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's squad will take to the pitch next Saturday for their AAC opener against Bryan College at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.
