Bears ranked 13th in latest NAIA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Pikeville's loss last week at Milligan did minimal damage to its standing in the national ratings.

Late Wednesday morning the Bears learned it slipped only one spot in the poll and now stand 13th in the country.

The fifth NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll was the first to come out since UPike's 16-game win streak came to a halt with a 103-96 loss to the Buffaloes last Wednesday.

It was the first loss in league play for the Bears, who are now 11-1 in the conference, and their first loss in any form since Nov. 8.

Huntington (Ind.), a team the Bears lost to in November, is receiving votes. Cumberlands, who the Bears beat on Dec. 16, moved up two places to No. 6, while Life, which was in the Top 10 when the Bears beat it on Thanksgiving weekend, is no longer getting votes.

Grace (Ind.), the team that eliminated UPike in last year's national tournament in the second round, is 20-0 and received 17 of the 18 first-place votes. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) got the only other top line vote and is second.

Oklahoma Wesleyan, Ava Maria (Fla.) and Indiana Wesleyan round out the Top 5.

Cumberlands is followed by Arizona Christian, Nelson (Texas), Langston (Okla.) and Bethel (Ind.) in the Top 10.

UPike's next scheduled game is Saturday at the Appalachian Wireless Arena, when it hosts Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) College. The second game of a doubleheader, gametime is scheduled for 4 p.m.
