Extra time again unkind to UPike

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville women's soccer team was outlasted in extra time Friday night by their visitors from Georgetown College, who defeated the Bears 1-0.

The Bears record falls to 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference and 3-2-2 overall, while the Tigers climb to 3-3-3 overall with a win in their first league contest.

Pikeville has lost both its conference games in overtime in the last week, giving it four games that went the distance tied this season.

Though the Tigers clearly were in control for most of the game, they were unable to get past UPike freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Schulte, who continued her impressive first season by recording 13 saves and holding the Tigers scoreless for 91 minutes.

The Bears were only able to muster up a pair of shots for the length of the game, with Georgetown goalkeeper Cathie Shaver only required to make one save in the game.

Georgetown repeatedly took shots on UPIKE, totaling 24 shots altogether to UPike's two. Georgetown's aggressive play also garnered them a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Inevitably, the burden finally took its toll on Schulte. When Taylor Feist's pass found Tara Joseph in the box in the 91st minute, Joseph quickly banged in the golden goal that decided the contest in Georgetown's favor.

The Bears return to the pitch Thursday at 5 p.m. when they will entertain Union College.
