Roundup: Bears’ soccer wins, loses in OT

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville women's soccer team nailed an overtime goal to knock off Salem International 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon, while the men suffered an overtime loss at Salem 1-0.
 
The teams will return to action on Sunday when they close out the home portion of their schedules with a doubleheader against Cumberland University. The women will begin at noon with the men at 2 p.m.
 
In an effort to raise cancer awareness, Sunday's game will be labeled, “Find the Cure,” with several activities to help in that effort.
 
Women: Senior Kara Henning scored an unassisted goal in the 107th minute to give her team a 3-2 win at Salem.
 
After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Bears rallied with goals by sophomores Kayla Robertson and Eleanor Hollingsworth to tie the game. Robertson scored when freshman Amanda Hord found her, with Hollingsworth's game-tying shot coming off a pass from Henning in the 69th minute.
 
Sophomore keeper Brittany Dye saved seven shots in earning her first win of the season.
 
On Saturday, the Bears lost at Rio Grande by a 5-0 final. Sophomore Katie Bates and freshmen Marianna Rodrigues Jorge and Chelsee Carlos were turned away.
 
Men: Salem's Mehmet Djemson was credited with a goal in the first minute of overtime to give the home team a win.
 
Senior keeper Sheldon Thomas turned away all nine shots in regulation.
 
Pikeville had two shots on goal in the loss, coming from freshman Colin Conaway and sophomore Terrance Johnson.
 
On Monday, the Bears lost 8-1 at Cumberlands in a Mid-South Conference contest.
 
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Bears saw the Pats run away in the second frame. Pikeville's goal came in the 80th minute when senior Jody Grigsby nailed a penalty kick.
 
Thomas had nine saves in the loss.
 
No. 1 ranked Rio Grande remained unbeaten on the season when it recorded a 13-0 win over the Bears on Saturday. Shots by Johnson and sophomore Djemson Lormistois were turned away.
