Box Score
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – It wasn't the first Mid-South Conference win in program history, but it's certainly the most memorable, as the University of Pikeville men's soccer team got a golden goal from
Brandon Lopez in the 109th minute to beat Georgetown (Ky.) 2-1 on Saturday at iHigh Field.
The double-overtime win is the first for the Bears (5-11-1, 2-6-1 MSC) against Georgetown (5-11-1, 3-6 MSC) and is just their second MSC win all time after beating St. Catharine (Ky.) earlier this season.
With the score knotted at 1-1 and a little over a minute on the clock, UPIKE possessed the ball on the right side of the field to set up the golden moment.
Dean Johnson played it first with a through ball to a teammate who instantly flicked the ball forward to a running Lopez.
Lopez gathered himself at a nearly impossible angle to score and fired a cross looking for anyone making a run at the goal. Instead, his pass crept toward Tiger goalkeeper Justin Davis who put a fist on it looking for a block, but instead sent it into the back of the net to end the game.
Pikeville rushed the field and gathered around Lopez who had scored the first goal of his career in dramatic fashion.
Johnson had given UPIKE an early lead with a seventh-minute strike, but the Tigers answered in the 28th with a goal from Hunter Conner.
While the Bears won't qualify for the eight-team Mid-South Conference Championship due to losing a tiebreaker with Shawnee State (Ohio), it's still a positive way to end one of the best seasons in recent program history.
The five wins are the most for UPIKE since winning six in 2009. Last season, the Bears went without a win, going 0-14 for the year.
Georgetown outshot the Bears 15-13, including a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Corner-kick chances also went to the Tigers 8-5 and fouls 4-3.
Diego Rivas collected six saves, while Davis had four for the Tigers. Both keepers went the distance, playing all 109 minutes.
