HENDERSON, Tenn. – Despite leading 1-0 early in the second half, the University of Pikeville men's soccer team ultimately lost in overtime at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 2-1 on Friday in the 2013 Lions Cup.
Cooper Gaypia put the Bears on top in the 55th minute with the match's first goal off a setup from Dean Johnson, but the Lions were able to find an equalizer just five minutes later from Sam Simpson.
After another 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, the match went into extra time where Freed-Hardeman's Christopher Campbell took a pass from Michael Rebmann to deliver the golden goal just less than seven minutes into the period.
Freed-Hardeman improves to 2-0 on the season, while UPIKE drops to 0-3. The Bears take on Johnson (Tenn.) at 8 p.m. ET in the final game of the Lions Cup Saturday night.
The Bears could have had a much rougher start to the match had goalkeeper Alfredo Piedra not come up with a big stop in the 15th minute. The Lions' Campbell was given a penalty kick after a UPIKE foul, but Piedra blocked it away to retain the tie.
Piedra finished with 11 saves in the match as Freed-Hardeman fired 28 shots, compared to 12 for the Bears. Thirteen of the Lions' strikes were on goal as UPIKE put just six on frame.
The Lions finished with eight corner kicks and UPIKE attempted four, while Lion keeper Hunter Yoches was busy as well with five saves.
Both keepers were forced to make a save in the first two minutes of overtime before Campbell brought action to a close with the golden goal.
