Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. – A two-match losing streak for the University of Pikeville volleyball team was snapped in emphatic fashion on Friday with a pair of dominant 3-1 wins over LaGrange (Ga.) and Brescia at the Sewanee Invitational.
UPIKE (5-2) took care of LaGrange (0-5) in the first match of the day by scores of 21-25, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-23. Similarly, the Bears dropped the first set to Brescia in the nightcap 25-20 before taking 25-23, 25-11 and 25-18 wins to secure the sweep.
Chelsea Staples and
Sydney Hall paced the offense in the opener with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. UPIKE failed to have a player reach double figures in kills against Brescia, but Staples, Hall and freshman
Connor Cook each tallied nine with
Audri Ray chipping in with seven.
The Bears hit best against Brescia (3-3) with a .153 percentage after putting up a mark of .058 against LaGrange. Unforced errors helped UPIKE win despite the poor hitting mark as LaGrange posted 13 service errors, compared to two for the Bears.
Pikeville served with a purpose in both matches, notching 14 and 15 aces, respectively, with single digits in errors. Ray made the most of her serves with a match-high six aces in both contests.
Setter
Sydney Morris had a big day as well, tallying 35 assists against LaGrange and team highs with 32 assists and 15 digs against Brescia.
Caitlynn Pfaadt and
Rachel Murphy led the defense with 12 kills each in the first match.
UPIKE has one match left at the Sewanee Invite, taking on the host Tigers at Noon ET on Saturday.
