WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- With a nearly entirely brand new program this year, UPIKE track and field showed promise for the future with 10 event places at the MSC Championships this weekend.
The 24 points earned by the men's team is the most by any UPIKE track and field team at a MSC Championship event in program history.
In addition to the event places, Xaviar Gaona qualified for the NAIA Nationals meet next month with a 14.49-meter mark in the triple jump, just a centimeter away from passing the NAIA "A" standard, but more than enough to meet the "B" standard in the event.
Christopher Dublin also earned points in the event with a 12.14 m long mark to finish eighth. Gaona also placed in the high jump, finishing fifth with a 1.84 top jump.
Job Corbett earned points for the Bears in the first men's event of the meet: the decathlon. Corbett finished fifth in the event and was the second highest ranking freshman.
Josh Green scored a point by finishing eighth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 21.47 seconds. Theo Edmondson also finished eighth in the 400 meter hurdles with a 1:05.34 mark.
Kim Lester provided the top finish on the women's side with a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a 1:10.95 mark.
The other Edmondson brother, Tyler, finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a 22.26 second time.
UPIKE also earned points in a couple team events as well in the 4x100 meter and the 4x800 meter relays. Dublin, the Edmondson brothers and Dillon Wheatley combined to finish sixth in the 4x100 with a 43.50 second lap, just over a second away from fourth.
Ryan Wolf, Benjamin Hall, Jalil El-Amin, and Josh Green earned two points with a seventh place finish in the 4x800 at 9:41.00.
