Blake Maupin found himself finishing in the top five for the third time this season, leading the Bears in their third-place finish at the Golden Bear Classic. Both Maupin and
Lawson Hon earned All-Tournament honors following 36-holes at Glade Springs.
The Bears fell short of the runner-up position by just seven strokes, carding a 625 team score to finish +49 despite some challenging conditions on day one of the tournament. Event host West Virginia Tech claimed the title while Indiana University – Kokomo finished runner-up. Rio Grande finished at +51 to finish fourth.
Four events into the fall, the Bears have yet to finish outside of the top three. This week's tournament was one of the more challenging for UPIKE as Cobb Course has played host to a handful of notable NCAA tournaments.
Par five scoring was the Bears' bread and better, leading the tournament shooting -4 as a team. Maupin led the tournament in par five scoring individually, averaging 4.50. The Bears also led the tournament with 22 birdies.
Monday ended with the Bears in third, 15 strokes back from IU-Kokomo who shot a 302 on the first 18 to top the day one leaderboard. Maupin's 74 (+2) paced the Bears through the first round as the senior carded three birdies.
Hon made an incredible jump, following up an 80 (+8) on day one with a 73 (+1) on Tuesday which thrust him from 15
th to sixth on the leaderboard. Hon claims his first all-tournament distinction, behind his three-birdie performance in the second round.
Also making a sizable climb on day two was
Broc Crist who clubbed a 75 (+3) to finish tied for 12
th after sitting 20
th heading into Tuesday.
Wrapping up the top-15 finishers for the Bears was
Nate Feese who shot scores of 79 (+7) and 81 (+9) to finish tied for 14
th.
Jonathan Bryant finished with a 36-hole score of 163 to finish 19
th while
Garrett Compton totaled 166 to tie for 25
th.
The Bears return to action on Monday, October 17
th for the Roger Merb Invitational in Portsmouth, Ohio.
