Louisville, Ky. - After a solid performance at the Marietta Open last weekend, Coach David Espinoza's track and field Bears swept the throwing events at Kentucky Collegiate Invitational Saturday.
Noah Thomas won the shot put and made A standard with a win in the weight throw. Thomas threw a 14.72m in the shot put and took the weight throw with a 17.80m toss, both new school records. David Exum made the final in both weight throw and shot put. Aaron Watson set a new personal record in the shot put with a 9.31m throw. Freshman Eli Fortman made his UPIKE debut with a 10:53.12 and a fifth place finish in the 3000m. Bobby Allums ran a 54.27m in the 400m.
On the women's side, the Bears did very well in the weight throw. Verlecia Scarlett finished first with a 14.3m7 toss in the weight throw. Gabby Cook finished third in the weight throw with a 12.26m throw, a new personal record. Kylie Hall also set a personal record in the weight throw with a 8.98m toss. The Bears had three athletes make the final in the weight throw with Scarlett, Cook, and Bethany Tackett. In the shot put, sophomore Valerie Kendrick won the event and set a new meet record with a 12.62m throw. In the hurdles, freshman Heaven Carver clocked an 11.22 in the finals of the 60m hurdles.
The Bears have this weekend off but will be back in action February 4th for the 2023 Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va.
