Cincinnati, Ohio - The track and field Bears were back in action this weekend, competing in the Mount St. Joseph Invite Saturday.
Freshman sprinter Heaven Carver made the finals in her long jump debut. Carver also made her debut in the high jump event as well. In the shot put, Valerie Kendrick threw an 11.56m, good for second out of 33. Verlecia Scarlett won the weight throw with a 15.08m throw, setting a new personal record and new school record. Gabby Cook made the finals in the weight throw, setting a new personal record with a 12.41m toss. Bethany Tackett's 11.98m toss in the weight throw was a new personal best and her 8.87m throw in the shot put was a new season best.Â
In the sprints, Bobby Allums finished sixth in the 200m and Eli Fortman set a personal record with a time of 1:32.73 in the 600m. Avery Adderley made his debut in the high jump, recording a 1.70m.
Aaron Watson set a personal record in the weight throw with a 11.75m toss. Also in the weight throw, Noah Thomas set a personal, school, and facility record. Thomas threw a 18.48, almost three meters better than the second place finisher. With the throw, Thomas gets an A standard and moves back up to number eight nationally. Thomas also finished third in a 48 competitor field in the shot put.Â
"This was a great tune-up before the MSC Championship. This shows that we are moving in the right direction and that we will be ready come Friday," said UPIKE Head Coach David Espinoza after Saturday's meet.Â
Coach Espinoza's squad will be back in action next weekend for the Mid-South Conference Indoor Championships in Louisville, Ky.Â
