WALESKA, Ga. – A pair of men's soccer players have been named the players of the week by the AAC.
Yali Cohen was named offensive player of the week, while
Alejandro Iglesias was honored as defensive player of the week.
The honors are a result of voting by the league's sports information directors.
Cohen, a 5-9 junior midfielder from Tel Aviv, Israel, was honored for his efforts last week when he was involved in both goals in a 2-1 win over Milligan (Tenn.) University.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Bears tied the game on a goal by
Samuel Cristancho. It was the first goal of the season for the junior. The assist was by Cohen, his first of the season as well.
It stayed that way until halftime. But in the 58th minute, Cohen banged in his third goal of the season. The pass was from sophomore
Finn Wijnen to put the Bears in front to stay.
Iglesias is a 6-3 freshman from Madrid, Spain. He was in goal for all 180 minutes last week, allowing only one goal in a pair of conference wins.
He recorded five saves in the win over Milligan on Wednesday evening. In Saturday's 1-0 win at Reinhardt (Ga.) University, he turned away all three shots on goal.
On the season, Iglesias has recorded 38 saves.
UPike is now 8-5-2 on the season. The Bears are 6-2-2 in the league, which has them in fourth place in the 13-team conference.
The Bears have two league games remaining. They host Montreat (N.C.) College on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.
