PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Chances were at a premium at Bob Amos Park for the University of Pikeville women's soccer team, who lost 3-1 to conference foe St. Catharine.
 
The Bears, who were outshot by the visiting Patriots 26-6 including a 12-1 disadvantage in the second half, saw little of the ball for most of the evening.
 
Senior forward Krista Russell opened St. Catharine's account in the 33^rd minute, when her head met freshman Macy Higdon's corner kick in a superb aerial display.
 
Six minutes later UPIKE freshman Carmen Koster brought the teams back to level ground via an excellently controlled half-volley from classmate Katelyn Abdon's lofted through ball.
 
For a time the game appeared destined to end in a draw as the Bears repelled attack after attack throughout the second half. It was Sarah Herbert though who was able to break the tie by keeping her shot from close range low and just inside the far post after being sent through by her fellow freshman Kelsey Pendleton. Herbert would turn provider in the 90^th minute as she rolled the ball simply to Russell, who shot home to earn a brace.
 
St. Catharine's sophomore keeper Lindsey Vinson was called into action five times, saving four.
 
The Bears' own sophomore keeper, Chelsea Schulte, had another strong but demanding outing as she produced 11 saves against three goals allowed. Schulte turned in a highlight reel-worthy save in the 25^th minute, as she denied a screamer from three yards out following a well-worked free kick routine by the Patriots.
