Bears add Guminsky to football staff

The University of Pikeville football program has added to its coaching staff as it prepares for the 2023 season, landing a young man with vast experience at the collegiate level.

Head Coach Corey Fipps has announced the hiring of Brett Guminsky. He will be co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach.

"Coach Guminsky brings a lot of experience to our program," said Coach Fipps, who is beginning his third season at Pikeville. "He has coached on every level, from NCAA Div. I programs to first-year teams. He has a passion for the sport that I believe will be infectious for our players.

"We're thrilled to bring Brett aboard."

Guminsky is coming to Pikeville from Iowa Wesleyan University, an NAIA school located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Last season, he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and led the Panthers to a top 20 finish in passing yards and had the most rushing yards for the school in five seasons.

Prior to that he has spent time at McDaniel College, an NCAA Div. III school in Westminster, Md., where he was offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach; Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., where he was tight ends/H-backs coach; and Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn., where he was tight ends coach and offensive quality control assistant.

A native of Williamsburg, Va., Guminsky was offensive and recruiting assistant at the University of Richmond when the team advanced to the 2016 FCS quarterfinals.

He helped start the football program at the University of New England and has coached two NCAA Div. I quarterbacks who threw for 3,000 yards.

The Bears will begin the 2023 season on August 26 with a game at Campbellsville University. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The home opener is slated for Sept. 2, when the Bears host the University of the Cumberlands at 6 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Conference.
