MIDWAY, Ky. - UPIKE men's and women's swimming opened the 2025 half of their schedule with a meet against Midway University and Shawnee State University Saturday.
Team captain Jacob Rubado took fourth in the 100 breaststroke after recording a 1:11.93. Benjamin Mclauchlan finished fourth in the 100 backstroke, then swam a 1:00.86 in the 100 freestyle, good for fourth as well. Finishing one second behind Mclaughlan in the 100 freestyle was Ryder Slone.
In the 200 backstroke, Bryce Barton finished fifth after finishing with a time of 2:27.98. Barton also finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and one spot behind Mclaughlan in the 100 backstroke. The men's team ended the day with the 400 freestyle. The team of Mclaughlan, Rubado, Slone, and Zane Whitaker recorded a 3:47.50 and finished fourth to cap off the day.
In the head-to-head matchups, UPIKE was bested 179.00-29.00 by Shawnee State and 152.00-46.00 by Midway.
On the women's side, Madelyn Smith finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 freestyle. In the 23rd event of the afternoon, Smith took second in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Daylin Patrick's day was highlighted by fifth place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle events.
Head-to-head, the women's team was defeated 145.00-24.00 by Shawnee State and 133.00-24.00 by Midway.
Coach Bernie Haney's swim Bears will be back in the pool again next week when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio for a meet with Shawnee State.
